SFA completes series sweep of Kats

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston could not hold leads in the sixth or seventh innings as Stephen F. Austin rallied for an 11-8 victory in the eighth inning to sweep a three-game Southland Conference series at Bearkat Softball Complex on Saturday.

The Bearkats (15-29, 11-13 SLC) had a two-run lead heading into the sixth when the Ladyjacks (32-9, 23-1 SLC) got a a two-run single up the middle from Camryn Middlebrook to tie it.

Sam Houston came roaring back to take the lead in the bottom of the frame. Freshman Hannah Scheaffer ripped a lead-off solo home run to left field, and sophomore Kyndal Kutac brought in two more with a single down the right-field line to make it 8-5.

SFA wouldn't go away. The Ladyjacks score three more in the top of the seventh on RBI doubles by Marisa Arriaga, Amanda Carden and Middlebrook to tie it at 8.

Kassidy Wilbur came on in relief for SFA to start the bottom of the seventh and quickly worked herself into a second-and-third situation when junior Sheridan Fisher hit a lead-off single and freshman Emily Telg reached on a fielder's choice as the Ladyjacks failed to get the force at second. Wilbur was able to retire the next three batters to end the scoring threat.

SFA scored the game-winning runs off sophomore Regan Dunn (6-11) in the eighth on a three-run double by Lexi Benson.

Wilbur gave up a lead-off walk to freshman Ellie Grill in the bottom of the eighth but retired the next three batters in order to improve to 28-3 on the season.

Grill drove in a run with a single in the first, and Kutac added an RBI double before two more runs scored on an error as Sam Houston took a 4-3 lead. Freshman Taylor Bachmeyer, who went 3 for 4, made it 5-3 with an RBI single in the fourth.
