Lewis headlines Bearkats SLC all-academic honors

FRISCO - Sam Houston's Ashley Lewis is the Southland Conference Volleyball Student-Athlete of the Year the league announced Tuesday alongside the Southland Academic All-Conference rosters.
The Student-Athlete of the Year award is selected by the Southland Conference awards committee, which consists of one administrator from each of the 13-member universities. The Southland Student-Athlete of the Year award is presented to the one student-athlete who achieves excellence in both academics and athletics. All nominees shall have earned at least a 3.2 GPA on a 4.0 scale and demonstrated athletics achievement for at least two years at the nominating institution.
Lewis added to her already impressive senior campaign for the Bearkats as she was awarded the Southland Conference Volleyball Student-Athlete of the year. This goes along with her other accolades where she was named the Southland Volleyball Player of the Year, a first team all-conference selection, as well as garnering AVCA All-Southwest Region Honorable Mention and AVCA All-America Honorable Mention nominations. She finished the season ranked fifth in the nation for attacks per set (13.32), 22nd nationally for points per set (4.97) and 23rd in the NCAA for kills per set (4.36). The Houston, Texas native holds a 3.94 GPA as a finance and marketing major.
The conference also announced the first and second team all-academic selections. Senior Ashley Lewis was the Kats lone first team selection with sophomore Morgan Janda and junior Breanne Chausse rounding out the Kats selections on the second team. Lewis was named an automatic selection after garnering first team all-conference honors.
Breanne Chausse made her second appearance on the Southland Conference all-academic team as the junior Coppell, TX native finished the year with a 3.96 GPA while studying banking & finance. She played in all 56 sets on the year, totaling 166.5 points, 38 blocks and tallying 2.61 kills per set.
Morgan Janda made her first appearance on the Southland Conference all-academic team as the sophomore Katy, Texas native finished with a 3.95 GPA while studying accounting. Janda was a second team all-conference selection as she played in all 56 sets on the season finishing with 7.34 assists per set, which placed her fifth in the Southland. She finished with 164 digs.
Sam Houston put up the second most all-academic selections in the conference as they finished with three selections and Texas A&M Corpus-Christi finished with four.
The Bearkats put together an 11-3 season in the spring 2021 season, going 10-2 in conference play. They advanced to the championship match of the Southland Conference tournament before bowing out to AMCC.
