HUNTSVILLE — The Sam Houston men's basketball team has added a junior college transfer for the 2021-22 season, head coach Jason Hooten announced recently.
JD Ray has signed with the Bearkats out of Northern Oklahoma-Tonkawa where he earned several accolades the past two seasons playing for former head coach Donnie Jackson. The 5-10 point guard from Midwest City, Oklahoma averaged 16.3 points, 5.7 assists and 3.6 rebounds a game to lead the Mavericks to the Elite Eight of the NJCAA Tournament.
"JD is a welcome addition to our family," Hooten said. "He is proven winner and has made those around him better. He will fit great in our ball screen motion scheme, as well as really picking up the ball and pressuring hard on the defensive end.Â
"We felt like JD was the perfect fit for our program with what we already had coming back."
Ray finished his Mavericks' career with a 52-6 record as the starting point guard and led the team to back-to-back appearances in the NJCAA Tournament. He was first team All-Region II and first team All-OCAC, the Region II Tournament Most Valuable Player and was named to the NJCAA All-Tournament team.
He shot 40.1 percent from the floor, 37.1 percent from 3-point range and 79.8 from the free throw line.
