Kats open SLC Outdoor T&F Championships

HUMBLE — The Sam Houston men's and women's track and field teams opened the Southland Conference Outdoor Championships on Friday at Turner Stadium.

Brian Orlando took the bronze in the hammer throw with a toss of 58.88 meters to earn six points for the men. Daveon Thomas placed seventh with a throw of 49.72 to pick up two points, and Luke Thielemann was right behind Thomas in eight with a mark of 48.47.

Zachary Johnson placed eight in the long jump with a leap of 6.97 meters to earn a point to help the men rank fifth in the standings through three events.

Elise Smith placed fifth in the javelin with a personal record of 41.49 meters to earn four points as the women stand tied for ninth place through five events.

The SLC championships resume Saturday with the men's decathlon at 9 a.m.
