Kats rake in all-America honors

HUNTSVILLE - The 2020 FCS National Champion Sam Houston Bearkats have brought in their share of all-America honors this season. Below is a listing of all players who have received those honors.
ERIC SCHMID
HERO Sports; AFCA (Second Team); Stats Perform (Second Team)
A dual-threat who was at his best when it mattered most for the Kats, Schmid accounted for 3,244 yards of total offense and 28 touchdowns in his first full season as the Bearkat starter behind center. In four playoff games he accounted for 945 yards of total offense and nine touchdowns while not turning the ball over in three of those contests.

JEQUEZ EZZARD
HERO Sports (WR & PR); AP (WR – Second Team); AFCA (First Team – All Purpose); Stats Perform (Second Team – PR); Athlon (First Team – All Purpose)
The Most Outstanding Player of the FCS Championship game, Ezzard proved himself to be arguably the most explosive player in all of the FCS. He accounted for 12 touchdowns for the season, including four combined scores in the semifinals and finals of the playoffs. For the year he finished with 1,208 all-purpose yards on the year, averaging 20.1 yards per touch.

COLBY THOMAS

One of two players on the offensive line to start every game this season, Thomas backed up his first team all-SLC preseason choice with a stellar year. A key piece that made the line work all year, Thomas saw time at center guard and tackle at different times throughout the season, including playing all three positions in the same game at Northwestern State.

PRINCE PINES
HERO Sports (Sophomore)
One of two players to start all 10 games, Pines was one of the top offensive linemen the Kats had to offer. A transfer from Baylor, Pines immediately stepped into a starting role and held down the left guard spot throughout the season for the explosive Bearkat offense.

JAHARI KAY
AP (First Team); AFCA (First Team); Stats Perform (First Team); Athlon (First Team)
Kay followed up a steady 2019 with a breakout Spring 2021 season, finishing eighth in the voting for the Buck Buchanan Award, giving annually to the top defensive player in the FCS. He forced four fumbles on the year and finished with 13.5 TFLs and 6.0 sacks on the year.

JOSEPH WALLACE
HERO Sports
For a unit that was elite in the Spring 2021 season, no piece may have been bigger than Wallace. The senior interior lineman finished with 31 tackles on the season, but also racked up 8.5 TFLs and 2.5 sacks, including a key sack late in the game against James Madison that helped the Kats secure a berth in the FCS Championship game.

JEVON LEON

Levon was one of the top freshmen in the nation a year ago and was part of arguably the best defensive line in the nation this season. He finished with 6.0 TFLs and 4.0 sacks for the year, while also recovering three fumbles.

ZYON McCOLLUM

McCollum locked down his side of the field throughout the year, earning first team all-SLC honors at the end of the regular season. The senior cornerback racked up 46 tackles and forced a pair of fumbles. He picked off his 10th career pass against James Madison, setting up the Kats' final score of the day.

SETH MORGAN
HERO Sports (Freshman)
Morgan was huge for the Kats all season with no kick being bigger than his career-long, 45-yard field goal near the end of the third quarter in the FCS Championship game vs South Dakota State. The freshman nailed 12 of his 14 field goal tries on the season, including both attempts from over 40 yards and was 45 for 48 on PAT tries.

BRAIDEN CLOPTON

Clopton started the final nine games of the season for the Kats at safety and finished second on the team with 72 total tackles. He added 3.0 TFLs and a fumble recovery, leading the team with 10 stops in the FCS championship game win over South Dakota State.
