HUNTSVILLE - As a result of Sam Houston's phenomenal Spring 2021 season, capped off by the FCS National Championship in football, Director of Athletics Bobby Williams announced on Friday the promotion of several members of the athletics staff.
In addition to that crowning achievement, men's golf finished in the top 10Â at the NCAA Championships, the department captured four Southland Conference championships, had 10Â Southland Conference Players of the Year, three Southland Conference Coaches of the Year, four Southland Conference Freshmen of the Year, three Southland Conference Student-Athletes of the Year, 17 Southland Conference All-Academic Team members, 65 All-Southland Conference selections, 20 NCAA All-Americans and one NCAA National Rookie of the Year, along with many other superlatives.Â
Â
"All of our staff worked extremely hard under very challenging conditions this past academic year," Williams said. "I am tremendously proud of each and every member of our staff, along with our other partners on campus, for pulling off what some schools didn't even attempt and many considered impossible given our facility renovation. We will continue to evaluate staff and reward as our budget allows, but for now, these individuals warranted these upgrades."Â
"Most of these individuals will report up through their respective Associate AD's to Senior Associate ADÂ Greg Hinze, who's leadership was instrumental this past year. With these changes, Greg will now have four Associate AD's under his umbrella, so I appreciate his willingness to take on additional direct reports."
Â
Travis Lies, Associate Athletic Director/Chief Operating Officer- "Travis has taken on several new responsibilities, including budget oversight, and has proven to be an invaluable member of our staff. He is a rising star in this profession."
Â
Ryan Carroll, Associate Athletic Director/Chief of Staff - "Ryan is a very positive and upbeat person no matter the circumstance. I am happy to be able to transition him into this new expanded role which will include our liaison with Human Resources and administrative staff oversight."
Â
John Holder, Associate Athletic Director/Finance - "John filled a big role for us and he has embraced it. While he technically reports to VP/Finance and Operations, he is still a valued member of our team."
Â
Nick Olsson, Assistant Athletic Director/Donor Relations and Fan Engagement - "Nick stepped up this past year and will now help oversee day-to-day operations related to ticketing, marketing, parking and engagement while also maintaining his previous role with donors and development."Â
Â
DJ Schwoegl, Event and Game Operations Manager - "DJ is a hard worker who has proven himself to be more than capable of this role. He will essentially take on one of Ryan's former duties and be our event operations point person."
Â
Tanner Howard, Facilities Manager - "Tanner has established himself as a key cog in the wheel in a very short amount of time. We are very fortunate to have hired him late last Fall and, like DJ, will now take on one of Ryan's former roles as our facilities lead."
Â
Sheridon McGrew, Digital Content Manager - "Sheridon has gradually taken on more and more responsibility as it pertains to digital content. This will be a big point of emphasis as we move into the WAC and I am confident Sheridon is up to the task."
