Volleyball earns AVCA Team Academic Award

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) announced its list of teams to earn the AVCA Team Academic Award for the 2020-21 academic year on Monday, with the Sam Houston Bearkats among that group.

Coach Brenda Gray's team was one of a record 1,275 teams from across the nation, breaking the mark set in 2018-19. It marks the tenth consecutive time the Kats have earned the honor.

The award, which was initiated in the 1992-93 academic year, honors collegiate and high school volleyball teams that displayed excellence in the classroom during the school year by maintaining at least a 3.30 cumulative GPA on an average 4.0 scale or a 4.10 GPA on a 5.0 scale.

The Kats were one of a record 243 Division I teams to receive the award and did so after a spring that saw them go 11-3 to finish second in the Southland Conference and runner-up in the Southland Tournament.

Senior Ashley Lewis headlined the Kats' awards by being named Southland Conference Student-Athlete of the Year, while teammates Morgan Janda and Breanne Chausse were each named to the Academic All-Southland second team.

The Bearkats will open up the 2021 season on August 27-28 at home when they host the Bearkat Invitational. The season opener will be vs Houston Baptist on the evening of the 27th, followed by matches on Saturday vs San Diego State and Central Arkansas.
