Four Kats earn USTFCCCA academic honors

NEW ORLEANS — Four Sam Houston student-athletes were named All-Academic Athletes for the 2021 NCAA Division I men's and women's track and field by the U.S. Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association, the organization announced Thursday.

Clayton Fritsch and Eric Callaway were selected to the men's team, and Allie Angelo and Halie Daniel were named to the women's team. To be eligible to be selected as a USTFCCCA All-Academic Athlete, student-athletes must have a minimum cumulative grade point average of 3.25 on a 4.0 scale.

For the indoor season, student-athletes must have also finished the season ranked in the top 96 in any championship individual event, or in the top 48 in any championship relay event, for the most recent indoor season. For the outdoor season, they must have participated in any round of the NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field Championships (the preliminary championship competition and/or the final championship competition) or for the multi-events, must have finished the season ranked in the top 48 in the East or top 48 in the West for the most recent outdoor season.

Fritsch, who qualified with a 3.43 GPA majoring in construction management, placed first in the pole vault at the SLC Indoor Championships to earn first-team all-conference recognition and finished seventh at the NCAA Indoor Championships to earn first-team All-America honors. He placed second at the SLC Outdoor Championships to land on the all-conference second team and took fourth at the NCAA Outdoor Championships to earn first-team All-America honors.

Callaway, who qualified with a 3.26 GPA majoring in electronics and computer engineering technology, ran on the Bearkats' 4x100-meter relay team that placed 22nd at the 2021 NCAA Outdoor Championships which earned him honorable mention All-America honors. He made the Dean's List in the fall.

Daniel, who qualified with a 3.91 GPA in obtaining her master's degree in homeland security, was third in the shot put at the Southland Conference Indoor Track and Field Championships, and she placed fifth in the weight throw. She ranked 80th nationally in the shot put.

Angelo, who qualified with a 3.43 GPA majoring in kinesiology, placed fifth in the pentathlon at the 2021 SLC Indoor Championships. She placed sixth in the heptathlon at the 2021 SLC Outdoor Championships, which ranked in the top 48 in the West Region.
