2021 Bearkat Football Preview: Offensive Line

HUNTSVILLE — Behind every great offense is a great offensive line, and Sam Houston returns a group that helped pave the way for a national championship.

That group started all four playoff games as Sam Houston took down No. 10 Monmouth, No. 6 North Dakota State, No. 1 James Madison and No. 2 South Dakota State to win the program's first FCS national title.

The Bearkats averaged 37.5 points per game last season which was ninth in the country. The team's 440.3 yards of total offense was the 13th best in the nation as were the 281.5 passing yards per game.

This year the unit will be tutored by second-year offensive line coach Chris Rogers and offensive assistant Mike Singletary. Each member of the Kats' line during the playoff run returns, while Jalen North, Moses Johnson and Peyton Fifield are also key returners to the offensive unit. North and Johnson both started games for the Kats last season at right guard and tackle, respectively.

Fifield missed last season due to an injury but played in all 12 games for the Bearkats in 2019. He saw action on the line and played special teams.

Texas State transfer Reece Jordan was a key offseason addition for Sam Houston. He started 24 games at center the past two seasons and made 42 total starts during his four years with the Bobcats.

Daniel Melendez, Will Jones, Noah Barboza, Anthony Turrubiartes, Ben Bankston, Ylijaah Hall, Walter Harris III, Seth Kohlscheen saw limited or no action last season but will continue to provide key depth on the offensive line in 2021. Ryder Wall, Trevor Jaks and CJ Marsh are talented blockers who were part of this year's signing class.
