Lewis, Janda named to preseason all-WAC team

DENVER, Colo. - Western Athletic Conference officials released the 2021 preseason all-WAC team on Wednesday with two Sam Houston Bearkats earning their way on to the team for Sam Houston's inaugural season in the WAC.

Senior outside hitter Ashley Lewis and sophomore setter Morgan Janda were the selections after both finished last season with numerous accolades in the Southland Conference.
Lewis heads into her final season coming off a season which saw her named Southland Conference Player and Student-Athlete of the Year, along with earning all-region and all-America honors from the AVCA. She led the Southland in kills per set (4.34) as well as ranking top 25 in the nation, finishing with at least 10 kills in every match on the season. Lewis posted 11 double-doubles in 14 matches played. The Houston native posted a career high 27 kills in a win over Houston Baptist, and a career high 25 digs in the season opening match versus Central Arkansas.

Meanwhile, Janda finished her second season with the Bearkats as an all-Southland Conference second team member and all-tournament selection at the Southland Tournament. She led the Kats and ranked fifth in the SLC with 7.34 assists per set on the season and upped that come conference tournament time with 9.67 assists per set in Corpus Christi. The Katy native finished with 10 double-doubles on the season and had a career high 44 assists in the Southland conference championship match along with five kills and a dozen digs.

The Kats kick off the 2021 season and their first in the WAC hosting the Bearkat Invitational at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum. The Kats take on former Southland foe Houston Baptist in their first match on August 27, before facing San Diego State later in the day. They end the tournament squaring off with Central Arkansas on August 28.
