HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston Bearkat volleyball team picked up a win in its first match of the season with a 3-0 (25-17, 26-24, 25-22) sweep of Houston Baptist in the Bearkat Invitational at Johnson Coliseum Friday morning.
The Kats (1-0) came out hot in the opening set, never trailing throughout. HBU (0-1) kept it close in the second set, taking the lead 24-23 at one point but the Bearkats rallied with a pair of kills from junior
Breanne Chausse and senior
Ashley Lewis.
Freshman transfer
Madeline McKinney ended the set with a service ace. The Kats pulled away late in Set 3 to complete the sweep.
Sam Houston was led by a double-double from Lewis who finished with 13 kills and 20 digs. She was followed by 11 kills from Chausse to go with eight digs.
Sophomore
Catherine Krieger finished with 8 kills while freshman
McKenzie Morvant had five kills to go along with her four total blocks.
Hannah Baker added 4 aces to her match high 22 digs.
Morgan Janda finished with 35 assists, also a match high. The Kats hit .185 compared to HBU's .079 in the match.
Next up for Sam Houston is San Diego State University at 6:30 pm at the Johnson Coliseum. The Aztecs are coming off a 3-0 loss to HBU earlier in the day. You can watch the match on wacdigitalnetwork.com.
