Williams named WAC Defensive Player of the Week

DENVER, Colo. - Sam Houston linebacker Trevor Williams has been named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week for the opening week of the season, per a release from league officials on Monday morning.
Williams helped the Kats hold Northern Arizona to just 91 yards rushing with four tackles and 0.5 TFLs in the top-ranked Bearkats' 42-16 win on the Lumberjacks' home turf on Thursday, but it was his 75-yard pick-6 in the third quarter that changed the game in a hurry.Â
After NAU had cut the SHSU lead to 21-10 and was driving once again in Bearkat territory, Williams picked off NAU quarterback Jeff Widener and raced it back up the left sideline to up the Kat lead to 28-10.
It was Sam Houston's first takeaway of the night and Williams' first career interception in addition to his second career touchdown.Â
Williams and the Kats will next host Southeast Missouri on Saturday at Bowers Stadium in the team's home opener. Kickoff is set for 6:00 p.m. with the game to be aired on ESPN+.
