Volleyball adds Thomas to 2022 roster

HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston volleyball team made a big addition to its 2022 roster recently with the addition of Lexy Thomas, head coach Brenda Gray announced on Wednesday.

Thomas joins the Bearkats with three years of eligibility remaining after having spent the past three years on the squad at UAB. She redshirted as a true freshman in 2019 before seeing the court in both 2020 and 2021, retaining a year of eligibility due to COVID-19 in 2020.

"Lexy has an opportunity to make an immediate impact on our program," Gray said. "She is quick, explosive and experienced. We are thankful for Lexy and her parents for getting here in the spring to train with the team all semester and get comfortable with Sam Houston and the Huntsville area. We know she is going to be a great addition to our championship program."

A 5-11 outside hitter, Thomas originally hails from San Antonio where she played at Warren High School and Alamo on the club volleyball circuit. There she was a 2-time all-district player and had 223 kills as a junior, leading WHS to the playoffs as a senior and Alamo to an Emerald Division title.

She then made her way to UAB where she got on the court for the first time in 2020, averaging 1.63 kills per set in a dozen matches for the Blazers. A year later she took on a bigger role, playing in 24 matches and finishing with 97 kills in 80 total sets.

The Bearkats are coming off a 2021 season that saw them finish 18-10 and advance to the NIVC for the second time in three years. The Kats claimed the WAC Southwest Division title in their first year in the league.
