HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston women's basketball team picked up their third straight win on Saturday afternoon, rolling past Seattle U, 73-54, at Bernard G. Johnson Coliseum.
The Kats (8-12, 3-6 WAC) turned in a balanced effort, pulling away with a 17-5 advantage in the second quarter and never looking back.
Sam Houston dominated the glass with a 44-34 edge on the Redhawks (6-13, 1-7 WAC) while forcing 21 turnovers. The Kats did most of their early damage from the line, hitting 11-for-16 from the stripe in the opening quarter and finishing 25-for-37 for the game.
Faith Cook capped off her solid week with a game-high 16 points, hitting four shots from long range. Damaya Telemaque joined her in double figures with 15, and LeAndra Echi picked up a double-double with 12 points and 10 rebounds with 10 of her 12 points coming in the opening half.
Raanee Smith turned in her best game as a Bearkat with nine points and nine 11 rebounds off the bench, and Kaylee Jefferson added 11 points.
The Kats led 20-11 after a quarter of play and then scored the first nine points of the second quarter as part of a 17-3 run that stretched the lead to 37-14 late in the quarter, providing a cushion was plenty for the Kats to work with the rest of the way.
Sam Houston will look to run their win streak to four in a row on Thursday when they travel to Orem, Utah, for a game at Utah Valley.
