HARAHAN, La. — The Sam Houston bowling team is near the top of the pack following day one of the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane on Friday.
Â
The Bearkats went 3-2 on the day in baker matches and currently stand in fifth place with 4,992 total pins for a 199.7 average. North Carolina A&T is in first place with 5,195 followed by University of Maryland Eastern Shore (5,085), Louisiana Tech (5,076) and Stephen F. Austin.
Â
"Certainly not the start we wanted but there were some positives," head coach Brad Hagen said. "Physically, we're in a great place but our mental competitiveness was evidently rusty. Later in the day the shot making was certainly better. If we can clean up the hiccups and stay more disciplined, we'll be just where we want to be come Sunday."
Â
Sam Houston picked up wins over Alabama A&M 946-814, Florida A&M 985-834 and Alabama-Birmingham 992-896. The Bearkats did top 1,000 in their match against Louisiana Tech but fell 1,112-1,095.
Â
The teams will play traditional competition Saturday with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday at Colonial Lanes.
