Phillips, Morgan earn WAC weekly honors

ARLINGTON – Sam Houston snagged a pair of weekly awards from the WAC on Monday as Jaylen Phillips and Seth Morgan were named the league's defensive and special teams players of the week after the Bearkats' win on Saturday at No. 23 Eastern Kentucky.

It is the first such honor for Phillips and the second this season for Morgan.

Phillips was a huge piece to another strong performance by the Bearkat defense, a unit which has held each of its last four opponents to no more than 17 points. The sophomore from Katy took full advantage of his increased role against the Colonels on Saturday, leading the Kats with a career-high 10 tackles and a pass breakup.

As a unit, the Bearkat defense held EKU to 338 yards on its home field and forced a pair of turnovers. They will enter this week with the No. 15 rush defense in the FCS, allowing an average of just 95.8 yards per game on the ground and having only allowed two 100-yard rushers in its last 37 games dating back to 2019.

Morgan, meanwhile, played the hero for Sam Houston by making all four of his field-goal tries in the 25-17 win.

That included the game winner from 34 yards out with only three seconds to play after EKU had taken its first lead of the game with just 1:01 remaining. Morgan had helped Sam Houston take that lead with makes from 45, 47 and 45 yards out.

It was just the fifth time in school history a Bearkat has made four field goals in a single game and he is one of eight players in the FCS to do so this year. He is now 6-for-6 on tries between 40-49 yards this year.

Phillips, Morgan and the rest of the Kats will go after their fourth consecutive win on Saturday when they travel to St. George, Utah, for a game at Utah Tech.
