BOWLING GREEN, Ky. — The Sam Houston women's golf team saved the best for last to capture the championship at the Olde Stone Intercollegiate tournament hosted by Western Kentucky on Tuesday.
The Bearkats closed the event, which featured three Power 5 conference programs and Norte Dame, with a 2-under 286 at The Club at Olde Stone, a par-72, 6,212-yard curse. Sam Houston finished the 54-hole event with a total score of 10-over 874 to topple Kennesaw State by nine strokes.
The is the second time this fall the Kats have won a tournament and third top-two finish. They bested the field by 40 strokes to win the Remax Prime Properties Invitational at the Bearkat Course on Sept. 27 and defeated eight Power 5 teams to finish second at the Marilynn Smith Sunflower Invitational hosted by Kansas on Oct. 18.
Zulaikah Nasser just missed on winning the individual championship, placing second with a 1-under 215 behind Carmen Griffiths of Louisville who shot 2-under 214. Nasser shot rounds of 74 and 73 to head into the final 18 holes at 3-over but had birdies on holes No.7, 8, 12, 13 and 14 Tuesday to finish with a 4-under 68.
Jenn David and
Jennifer Herbst also had top 10 finishes.
David was even for the tournament with rounds of 73, 71 and 72 to tie for third at 216. Herbst was 1-over after carding rounds of 75, 71 and 71 to place sixth with a 217.
Leah Alberto finished tied for 24
th with rounds of 77, 74 and 75 for a 10-over 226, and
Viera Permata Rosada placed 35
th with rounds of 77, 74 and 78 for 13-over 229.
Louisville was third in the team competition with a 22-over 886 followed by Campbell (889), Charleston Southern (908), Indiana (909), Santa Clara (911), Norte Dame (911), Western Kentucky (912), Middle Tennessee (914), Coastal Carolina (916), Cincinnati (934) and South Alabama (947).
