HUNTSVILLE — A record home-opening attendance got to witness a high-flying act as Sam Houston coasted to a 120-33 victory over Southwestern Adventist at Johnson Coliseum on Thursday.
The 87-point margin of victory is the largest in school history as the Bearkats improved to 2-0 on the season. Giovanni Emejuru led the way 16 points and seven boards, Lamar Wilkerson scored 15 points, Kaosi Ezeagu added 13 points and Ron Mitchell Jr. and Damon Nicholas Jr. each scored 11 as everyone on the roster scored in the contest.
The game was a huge contrast from Sam Houston's dramatic 52-51 win over Oklahoma in the season opener on Monday in Norman. That was a defensive affair, but this was all offense on the Bearkats' side.
Sam Houston shot a blistering 66 percent from the field and 44 percent from the free throw line. The team combined for 18 dunks, with all Emejuru's field goals coming from above the rim as the Kats outscored the Knights 71-16 in the second half.
The Bearkats came sprinting out of the gate and never slowed down in the opening period. Sam Houston grabbed its first double-digit lead with a jumper by Cameron Huefner to make it 17-7 at the 12:13 mark.
That's when Emejuru took flight.
He scored 10 points on five alley-oop dunks, the last putting the Kats up 36-14 with just under five minutes to play. Lamar Wilkerson later gave Sam Houston its biggest lead of the first half at 47-14 on a layup and a dunk.
