RENO, Nevada — Sam Houston couldn't get anything going offensively in the second half to suffer its first loss of the season with a 78-60 setback at Nevada on Monday.
The Bearkats (6-1) shot just 34 percent from the field and 29.4 percent from 3-point land. The Wolf Pack went 10 for 25 from behind the arc to pull away from a close game at the half.
Qua Grant and Donte Powers led Sam Houston with 12 points. Tristan Ikpe and Javion May each scored nine.
The Bearkats fell behind six early, but the Wolf Pack's lead didn't last long.
Powers tied the game at 6 with a jumper then hit a 3-pointer to give Sam Houston its first lead of the game at the 16:33 mark. He hit another shot from behind the arc two minutes later to give the Kats their biggest lead of the first half at 14-8.
The contest went back and forth, but Sam Houston hit a scoring drought late in the half. After going up 20-15 on a 3 by Javion May, the Kats went four minutes without scoring as Nevada took a 24-20 lead before Tristan Ikpe scored on a layup with 3:16 to go in the opening period.
Grant and May scored to tie the game at 27, but the Park got a basket to take a 29-27 lead in the closing seconds. Jaden May was fouled right before the break and knocked down a free throw to cut the lead to one.
Nevada outscored the Bearkats 49-32 in the second half to seal the victory.
