Bowlers drop to No. 2 in latest poll

Despite winning at tournament last week with one of the toughest fields in the country, the Sam Houston bowlers dropped out of the top spot in the most recent NTCA poll.

The Bearkats, who received the most first place votes with 17, were edged out for the No. 1 ranking by McKendree which received 15 first place votes. From the 39 ballots cast, McKendree received 32 more total points than the Kats.

Sam Houston competed in two tournaments this month, taking fourth in the Northeast Classic. They then won the Prairie View Invitational which featured a field that included the top eight teams in the country.Â

The Bearkats finished the tournament with a 10-3 record, with nine wins coming against teams ranked in the top 20 in the country. Five of those nine wins were against top-10 competition. In the championship bracket the Bearkats defeated No. 3 Nebraska and No. 5 Vanderbilt on their way to their first title at the International Training and Research Center, the home of the US Bowling Hall of Fame.

Nebraska remained in third place, gaining six first-place votes, with third place finishes at the Stormin' Blue and White and Prairie View while Vanderbilt slid up a notch into fourth on the strength of a win at the Northeast and a narrow loss to Sam Houston in the championship match at the Prairie View. The Commodores were also fourth in Las Vegas.

Louisiana Tech earned its first top five poll finish in program history, moving up from seventh after a fifth place showing at the Prairie View.

The poll's top 10 is completed by North Carolina A&T, slipping down from fourth into sixth place, followed by Arkansas State, Stephen F. Austin, Youngstown State and Mount St. Mary's. The poll points between the 8-9-10 teams were close.

The Kats will be back in action on Friday when they head to Dallas for the Lady Techsters Classic at USA Bowl.Â
