BEAUMONT – The Sam Houston women's basketball team continued its hot streak on Monday night with its seventh straight victory, rolling past Lamar, 66-57, at the Montagne Center.
The Kats (13-12, 7-6 WAC) led throughout and by as much as 16 in the third quarter to avenge a loss to the Cardinals (11-11, 6-7 WAC) from earlier in the season. It also marks the third straight win for the Kats at the Montagne Center, the first time in the history of the series between Sam Houston and Lamar that the Kats have won three straight games on the Cardinals' home floor.
Faith Cook delivered another big game for the Kats with 23 points on 6-for-12 shooting, including 3-for-7 from downtown. She now needs just 14 more points to reach 1,000 for her Bearkat career.
The Kats also got a big game from Courtney Cleveland with 17 points and eight rebounds, including a 13-point effort in the first half that was capped by her second 3-point bucket of the season going down as the halftime buzzer sounded to give the Kats a 12-point lead at the break.
Damaya Telemaque also reached double figures with 13 points, hitting five of her seven tries from the charity stripe on a night that saw the Kats hit 24 of 34 tries from the line.
The Kats' current 7-game win streak is the second longest among teams in the WAC, trailing only league-leading Stephen F. Austin's 12-gamer. Sam Houston will look to make it eight in a row on Thursday at Abilene Christian.
