HOUSTON — Sam Houston was three outs away from snapping a 10-game losing streak but Houston scored two runs in the seventh inning of game two to sweep a doubleheader Saturday at Cougar Softball Stadium.
Â
The Bearkats (9-21) lost the first game 1-0 behind a great outing by starting pitcher Brailey Wasik. Sam Houston was leading 2-1 in the finale thanks to another solid performance in the circle by Mika Vento only to lose on a walk-off, two-run single.
Â
The Bearkats finally got the clutch hits they have been looking for in the sixth inning of the nightcap.
Â
Brodie Quinlan drew a two-out walk and Elia Hebel laced an RBI double to left field. She moved to third on a wild pitch and scored on an infield single by Emily Telg.
Â
Vento did a great job keeping Sam Houston in contention to win the game, but the Cougars got a single and a walk to begin the seventh which led to the game-winning hit.
Â
The Bearkats had scoring opportunities as well in the opener and left the bases loaded in the fourth inning.
Â
With two outs, Kylie Hobbs reached on a fielding error and Hannah Scheaffer was hit by a pitch. Telg, who led Sam Houston with two hits, singled to short, but Houston starter Hannah Todd was able to get out of the jam.
Â
The Kats got the tying run on in the top of the seventh when Telg drew a lead-off walk. Once again, Todd worked around it to improve her season record to 4-4.
Â
Wasik only gave up one run in six innings of work to take the hard-luck loss.
Â
Sam Houston will host Abilene Christian in a three-game WAC series beginning with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m.
