Kats named top seed in Arlington Regional

For the 10th time in 12 years, the Sam Houston bowlers are headed back to the NCAA Championships. The Kats were selected as the No. 4 overall seed in the Arlington Regional and will begin play on Friday, April 8.

The Kats, seeded No. 1 in the region, will face off with Stephen F. Austin in and opening round. They are also joined by Louisiana Tech and North Carolina A&T at the regional.

"Any time you get to this part of the season, you know the matchups are going to be tough," said head coach Brad Hagen. "There are only 16 teams left competing, so we know we are going to see the best. With this new regional format getting to the finals isn't easy."

The Arlington Regional will take place at the ITRC, a building The Kats have had success in, winning the Prairie View A&M event in January. They have been regulars competing in that facility since the program started. The building also holds some historic significance for the Bearkat bowling program. It was the site of the of their first ever competitive match, a win over SFA in 2010.

"It's kind of fitting I guess," Hagen said about the matchup with SFA. "That's where it all started for us, so it's kind of fitting our first NCAA Championship event in Arlington is against them as well."

The format at the NCAA Regional and Finals will be the same as what the Bearkats faced at the Southland Bowling Championship. It will be a best of three mega match format. Both teams will compete in a traditional team total pinfall set, followed by a team baker set. If they split the first two sets, then the winner will be determined by a best-of-7 baker match.Â
The Kats have enjoyed one of the best regular season's in program history, winning two events and finishing in the top 4 in all but one event. They are currently the No. 3 ranked team in the NTCA top 25.
