Fritsch posts top pole vault in country

Sam Houston senior Clayton Fritsch currently leads the nation with the best mark in the pole vault this outdoor season after competing at the elite 62nd annual Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California over the weekend.

Fritsch turned in a jump of 19 feet, ¼ inch on his first attempt to tie with USA's Jacob Wooten. Both vaulters were unable to clear the next height.

Fritsch's mark moved him ahead of Sondre Guttormsen of Princeton on the Division I TFRRS performance list for the 2022 outdoor season. Guttormsen reached 18 feet, 10 ¼ inches at the Texas Relays in March.

Members of the Sam Houston track and field teams also competed at the Earl Milner Invitational at Stephen F. Austin over the weekend.

Erin Brown and Glenn Bender placed first and second in the men's 400-meter run. Brown ran it in 46.90 seconds while Bender posted a time of 47.32.

Denzel Downing won the 110-meter hurdles with a mark of 14.27 seconds. Tanner Day placed ninth in the event with a mark of 15.70.

Eric Callaway finished fourth in the 100-meter dash with a time of 10.52 seconds. Jacob Thomas was sixth in the 200 meters with a time of 21.72.

Elijah McWilliams finished fourth in the 1,500 with a time of 3:53.88. Kyan Wallace placed seventh with a time of 3:56.67, and Christian Rivera was eighth at 3:59.05.

In the field events, Steven Gruss took first in the high jump with a height of 6 feet, 6 ¾ inches. Ryan Olguin and Bryce Barbay placed third and fourth, respectively, in the pole vault with marks of 16 feet, ¾ inch and 14 feet, 9 inches.

Keshana Page was fourth in the women's 100 meters with a time of 12.03 and she was fourth in the 200 at 25.02. Haviland Harris placed third in the 400 with a time of 56.75.

McKenna Webb finished third in the pole vault with a jump of 10 feet, 10 inches. Alie Angelo placed eighth in the javelin with a mark of 102 feet.
