Janek named to Buster Posey Award watch list

WICHITA, Kan. – Sam Houston freshman catcher Walker Janek has been named to the Buster Posey National Collegiate Catcher of the Year Award watch list, per a release from the Greater Wichita Area Sports Commission on Monday.

Janek is one of 11 midseason additions to the list for the award given annually to the top Division I collegiate catcher. The list will be updated to include other candidates until May 4.

He has been a key part to the Bearkat attack in 2022, hitting .318 with three home runs and 16 RBI while playing in 30 of 35 games. He's had 11 multi-hit games this season, including six since March 29. Behind the plate he has been stellar, throwing out nine of 22 attempted base stealers.

The watch list will be narrowed down to semifinalists on May 19 and ballots will be sent to the national voting committee at the end of May for a vote to determine the three finalists.

The finalists will be announced June 7 and a final vote among the national committee will occur during the College World Series. All finalists will be brought to Wichita and the winner will be announced June 29.
