Fritsch earns WAC weekly field honor

DENVER — Sam Houston senior Clayton Fritsch has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, league officials announced Tuesday.
Fritsch currently leads the nation with the best mark in the pole vault this outdoor season after competing at the elite 62nd annual Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California over the weekend.

Fritsch turned in a jump of 19 feet, ¼ inch on his first attempt to tie with USA's Jacob Wooten for first place. Both vaulters were unable to clear the next height.

Fritsch's mark moved him ahead of Sondre Guttormsen of Princeton on the Division I TFRRS performance list for the 2022 outdoor season. Guttormsen reached 18 feet, 10 ¼ inches at the Texas Relays in March.
The jump was also a career best mark for the senior from Sealy and broke Sam Houston's previous school record of 18 feet, 10 1/4 inches Fritsch set in 2019.
