HUNTSVILLE — Kylie Hobbs hit a walk-off three run shot to guide the Sam Houston softball team to a doubleheader split with Stephen F. Austin on Friday.
Â
The Bearkats (12-27 overall, 5-15 WAC) won game one 5-2 then lost 2-1 in a thrilling nightcap that ended with a play at the plate.
Â
The Ladyjacks took a 2-0 lead off starter Regan Dunn in the opener, but she settled in and shut SFA down over the final three innings to keep Sam Houston in striking distance.
Â
Hobbs tied the game in the bottom of fourth when she launched an offering from Ladyjack ace Kassidy Wilbur to deep left center for a two-run shot.
Â
Sam Houston got things cooking in the bottom of the seventh after Brodie Quinlan hit a single up the middle and Kyndal Kutac walked with one-out. Wilbur was able to get a strikeout, but she couldn't escape the wrath of Hobbs' hot bat as the sophomore from Lexington sent the game winner over the wall in left.
Â
Dunn picked up her third win of the season after allowing only four hits to go along with five strikeouts.
Â
Game two was close as well for most of the contest with Sam Houston breaking a scoreless tie on an RBI single by Ellie Grill in the fourth.
Â
The Ladyjacks finally got to starter Mika Vento with two runs in the sixth, but she was able to pitch a scoreless seventh to keep the Kats in it.
Â
Grill singled to lead off the inning and moved into scoring position on a groundout by Hannah Scheaffer. With two outs, Sheridan Fisher dropped a single into left, and Grill was thrown out at home trying to score from second.
Â
The series finale is Saturday at noon. Fisher and Kutac will be honored on Senior Day before the game.
