Kats break meet records at Houston

HOUSTON — The Sam Houston track and field teams competed at the Houston Alumni Invitational over the weekend and broke several meet records.

Senior Andrew Bosquez won the men's 1,500-meter run with a time of 3:50.62, which shattered the meet record by almost nine seconds. Senior Joe Austin III was seventh in the 1,500 at 3:58.19 which was also better than the former meet record of 3:59.08.

Clayton Fritsch set a new meet record with a first-place finish in the pole vault with a jump of 18 feet, 1 inch. His mark beat the previous record by more than a foot.

Despite finishing fourth, sophomore Daviciea McCartney was fourth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.21. DJ Akindele of Houston set the new record at 13.98, nearly two seconds faster than the previous best of 15.74.

Senior Denzel Downing (14.39) and senior Tanner Day (15.42) also topped the previous record in the 110 hurdles to finish sixth and eighth.

Sophomore Cobe Graham finished first in the men's shot put with a throw of 50 feet, 4 ½ inches. Junior Brian Orlando placed first in the hammer throw with a distance of 197 feet, 9 inches, and sophomore Luke Thielemann was second at 183 feet, 10 inches.

Junior Morgan Janda had the top mark in the high jump with a leap of 5 feet, 7 inches. Sophomore KeAyla Dove placed second in the shot put with a toss of 50 feet, 1 ¾ inches.

Freshman Anivea Gilbert had strong showings in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes. She finished second in the 100 with a time of 11.85 seconds and was sixth in the 200 at 24.39.

Freshman Jackeria Woodkins placed second in the 400-meter dash with a mark of 55.73 seconds. Senior Rebeca Gonzalez was third in the 800 with a time of 2:16.98, and junior Haley Thomas was seventh at 2:21.18.

Sophomore Tia Harry finished sixth in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 13.73 just ahead of junior Haviland Harris at 13.78. Harris was second in the 400 hurdles with a mark of 1:01.79.

Freshman Rajer Gurode has the 10th-best time in the 100 at 12.05 seconds.

Sophomore Rachel Maciejeski was third in the pole vault with a jump of 11 feet, 11 ¾ inches, and sophomore Bailey Cotton was 10th at 10 feet even. Sophomore Kayla Shallenberger and freshman McKenna Webb also cleared 10 feet but in more attempts than Cotton.

Sophomore Charlee Salinas was fourth in the shot put with a throw of 44 feet, 11 ¾ inches, and freshman Lilly Rodel was seventh at 41 feet, 5 ¼ inches. Salinas was eighth in the hammer throw with a mark of 153 feet, 8 inches.

Senior Alie Angelo was fifth in the javelin with a distance of 108 feet, 8 inches.

On the men's side, sophomore Elijah Mitchell finished third in the 800 with a time of 1:54.54, freshman William Boyce was fourth at 1:54.69 and freshman Kyan Wallace was seventh at 1:58.39.

Freshman Javain Johnson was fifth in the 100 with a time of 10.60, and junior Glenn Bender was eighth at 10.62. Bender placed fifth in the 200 with a mark of 21.33, and junior Jacob Thomas was eighth at 21.46. Sophomore Benjamin Marshall finished fifth in the 400 with a time of 48.80.

Freshman Jace Lilljedahl finished second in the high jump with a leap of 6 feet, ¾ inch. Bryce Barbay placed second in the javelin with a throw of 139 feet, 11 inches and was third in the high jump at 5 feet, 8 ¾ inches.

Thielemann was second in the discus throw with a toss of 159 feet, 1 inch, freshman Kevin Grubbs was third at 158 feet, 5 inches and junior Daveon Thomas was fourth at 155 feet, 1 inch.

Freshman Dylan Truss finished sixth in the pole vault with a mark of 16 feet, 1 ¼ inches, junior Ryan Olguin was seventh at 15 feet, 7 ¼ inches, and sophomore Sebastian Garcia was ninth at 14 feet, 1 ¾ inches.

Freshman Jayden Allen placed ninth in the long jump with a distance of 21 feet, 5 ½ inches. Senior Joshua Hamilton was 10th at 21 feet, 1 ½ inches. Hamilton also had the fourth-best mark in the triple jump at 47 feet, ¾ inch.

Freshman Nikos Fotinopoulos finished fourth in the shot put with a mark of 46 feet, 2 inches, and Lilljedahl was ninth at 35 feet, 8 inches. Freshman Ben Ruiz was fourth in the hammer throw with a distance of 169 feet, 10 inches, and Thomas was fifth at 168 feet, 8 inches.
