Contreras named to Golden Spikes Award watch list

CARY, N.C. – USA Baseball announced its 45-player midseason watch list for the 44th Golden Spikes Award on Tuesday with Sam Houston outfielder Carlos Contreras landing on the list.

The award goes to the top overall player in college baseball and will be announced on Friday, June 24 on ESPN. The midseason watch list features 45 of the nation's top amateur players from the high school and college ranks and includes 26 athletes who have played their way onto the watch list since the preseason list was announced on February 15.

The Golden Spikes Award Advisory Board will continue to maintain a rolling list of athletes, allowing players to play themselves into consideration for the award before announcing the semifinalists on May 24.

Contreras' selection marks the third straight season the Bearkats have had a player on the radar for the top individual honor in college baseball after Colton Cowser was a semifinalist a year ago and was on the preseason watch list in 2020 before the season was shut down due to COVID-19.

Contreras, an El Paso native in his first year with the Kats, has been one of the top sluggers in the nation midway through the year and enters Tuesday's game at Houston hitting .426 with seven home runs, seven doubles, four triples and 49 RBI.

His RBI mark ranks second in the nation while his batting average currently ranks 14th.

Contreras' merits have earned him WAC Hitter of the Week honors three times this season and he holds four games with at least six RBI, and a pair of series – Texas Southern and Tarleton – in which he drove in 15 runs in a weekend.

His biggest single-day output came on March 27 when he set an SHSU single-game record with nine RBI at Stephen F. Austin, going 5-for-5 that day with a pair of homers.

On Tuesday, May 24, USA Baseball will announce the semifinalists for the 2022 Golden Spikes Award. The list of semifinalists will then be sent to a voting body consisting of baseball media members, select professional baseball personnel, current USA Baseball staff and the previous winners of the award, representing a group of more than 150 voters. As part of this selection process, all voters will be asked to choose three players from the list of semifinalists. On June 8, USA Baseball will announce the finalists, and voting for the winner will begin that same day.

Fan voting will once again be a part of the Golden Spikes Award in 2022. Beginning with the semifinalist announcement and continuing through the finalist round of voting deadline, fans from across the country will be able to vote for their favorite player on GoldenSpikesAward.com.
