HUNTSVILLE – Lane Brewster delivered a go-ahead RBI double in the bottom of the eighth inning to push the Sam Houston Bearkats to a 5-3 win over Lamar on Sunday afternoon at Don Sanders Stadium, salvaging the weekend series for SHSU and keeping the Kats in sole possession of first place in the WAC Southwest Division.
The Kats (24-19, 14-7 WAC) found themselves down 3-1 through four innings but manufactured single runs in both the fifth and seventh frames before striking for a pair of scores in the eighth on Brewster's hit and an RBI single from Clayton Chadwick.
That pair had a pair of hits apiece, as did Anthony MacKenzie, with Chadwick reaching base in four of his five plate appearances. He proved to be a key sparkplug late in the game, leading off the seventh with a triple and scoring the tying run on a sacrifice fly from Carlos Contreras, the second RBI of the game for the Kats' leading run producer.
Coltin Atkinson took a no-decision despite logging 5.0 innings in the start, before handing things off to Braden Davis and Lance Lusk who threw 2.0 innings apiece. Lusk picked up the win, punching out four Cardinals along the way, to move to 3-0 on the year.
Sam Houston does not have a midweek on the schedule for the upcoming week, but will continue WAC play on Friday night when it hosts Piney Woods rival Stephen F. Austin in the opener of a 3-game set.
