SHSU men take 2nd at outdoor championships

SEATTLE — The Sam Houston men's track and field team placed second at the 2022 WAC Outdoor Championships at the University of Washington over the weekend.

The Bearkats finished second with 135.5 points behind Grand Canyon's 155.5.

Clayton Fritsch once again dominated the pole vault competition. His gold-winning jump of 5.66 meters was more than a foot higher than the second-place finisher.

Eric Callaway ran away with gold in the 100-meter dash. He posted a time of 10.36 seconds, then took silver in the 200 meters with a time of 20.99.

Joe Austin III continued the gold trend for the Bearkats. He won the 800-meter run with a time of 1:52.15.

Not to be outdone, Daviciea McCartney was atop the medal stand in the 400-meter hurdles. He bested the competition with a time of 50.31 seconds.

Kevin Grubbs took first-place honors in the discus throw. His winning mark of 54.84 meters came on his fourth attempt.

Sam Houston's other first-place finish came in the 4x400-meter relay. Erin Brown Glenn Bender, Benjamin Marshall and McCartney topped the field with a time of 3:10.44, a second faster than Stephen F. Austin.

Joshua Hamilton captured silver in the triple jump with a leap of 14.49 meters. McCartney added to his medal haul with a second-place finish in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 14.04 seconds.

Brian Orlando placed second in the men's hammer throw with a toss of 58.54 meters. Kevin Grubbs won bronze in the shot put with a mark of 16.78.

The men's 4x100 meter relay team placed third with a time of 40.18 seconds.

Stephen Gruss was fourth in the high jump with a mark of 2.04 meters. Rylan Oliguin had a strong showing in the pole vault with a jump of 5.00 meters which put him in fifth.

Brown came close to medaling with a fourth-place finish in the 400-meter dash with a time of 47.37. Denzel Downing finished fifth in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.30.

Luke Thielemann was seventh in the hammer throw at 52.00 meters, and Cobe Graham was eighth in the shot put at 16.09. Daveon Thomas finished fourth in the discus throw with a mark of 50.01, and Thielemann was fifth at 49.36.

Andrew Bosquez picked up points for the men with a seventh place showing in the 1,500-meter run by posting a time of 3:52.65.
