Kats sign Wichita State transfer

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston men's basketball coach Jason Hooten had added a transfer guard from Wichita State for the 2022-23 season.

Qua Grant, a 6-1 guard from DeSoto, will have one year of eligibility with the Bearkats following his junior season at Wichita State and previous three seasons at West Texas A&M.

"We really feel Qua can give us a lot of experience and versatility at the guard spot," Hooten said. "He's a tough competitor with the ability to score the ball and create for others. His passion and penchant for winning also fits our culture, as well as his ability to defend.

"Qua is an exciting player to watch, and we're looking forward to coaching him and this team."

Grant was a reserve combo guard who appeared in 28 games with two starts and averaged 4.5 points, 1.8 assists and 1.0 steal in 16.5 minutes for the Shockers last season. He ranked third in the American Athletic Conference and 85th nationally with 2.5 steals-per-40-minutes and had as many steals (29) as turnovers (29) to finished with a 1.69 assist-to-turnover ratio.

Grant put up a season-high 13 points four times with one of those performances coming against Tulsa in the first round of the AAC Tournament.

He was also a two-time first-team Division II All-American at West Texas A&M. Grant earned first-team All-Lone Star Conference honors in all three seasons and twice made the league's all-defensive squad.

Grant led the Buffaloes to consecutive D-II Elite Eight appearances, capped by the school's first-ever trip to the national title game in 2021. He started all 93 games over his three seasons and amassed 1,742 points, 615 rebounds, 252 assists, 174 steals and 16 double-doubles while leading the West Texas to an 85-8 record and back-to-back-to-back conference regular season and tournament title sweeps.
