Fritsch named WAC Athlete of Year

DENVER — Sam Houston pole vaulter Clayton Fritsch has been named the Western Athletic Conference Male Track and Field Athlete of the Year, the league announced Monday.

Fritsch had a dominating outdoor performance this season, winning the pole vault at the WAC Championships with a jump of 5.66 meters which was more than a foot higher than the second-place finisher.

The senior from Sealy turned in the best mark in in the nation this outdoor season at the 62nd annual Mt. SAC Relays at Mt. San Antonio College in Walnut, California on April 16. His Fritsch's leap of 5.80 meters also broke the WAC record and the school record which he previously set in 2019.

He has twice been named the WAC Men's Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, and he is the only vaulter in the country to surpass the 19-foot mark this season.
