Roberts receives Vermeil Scholarship from CSCCA

HUNTSVILLE – Sam Houston assistant strength and conditioning coach Haley Roberts was recently named the recipient of the 2022 Lance Vermeil Scholarship Award, presented annually by the Collegiate Strength and Conditioning Coaches Association.

Roberts, who is in her first season working with Bearkat softball, women's basketball, soccer, tennis and bowling teams, officially received the award Tuesday at the annual CSCCa conference.

She spent the previous two seasons as a graduate assistant at the University of North Alabama where she is pursuing her master's degree in Health and Human Performance after receiving a bachelor's degree from UNLV.

"Haley embodies the traits and values that prioritize the physical, mental, and emotional development and well-being of our student-athletes," Sam Houston Associate AD for Strength and Conditioning Trevor Williams said. "She is cognizant of and empathic to the stresses present in student-athlete lives while balancing firm and stringent standards of hard work."

Since coming to Sam Houston, Roberts has coordinated research with professors on campus which has afforded the strength department access to DEXA scanning for all our athletes and provided GPS tracking technology for multiple teams, and has also applied for a national grant that will fund her thesis research and directly benefit the department with new technology and equipment.Â

In addition to her educational endeavors, she is responsible for designing, implementing, and tracking the athletic development programs for four separate Bearkat teams. Roberts has also developed a Wellness and Readiness to Train survey platform that has been implemented department wide to increase coaching effectiveness.

Roberts currently works as the Kats' top assistant with the SHSU football program, managing multiple positions group in the weight room and on the field while also serving as the the Strength & Conditioning internship coordinator.

"While Haley deserves to be recognized for her positive influence at Sam Houston State University, this award conveys our gratitude for her commitment to the betterment of our industry as a whole," Williams said.

In 2012, MF Athletic/Perform Better, a CSCCa sponsor, instituted the Lance Vermeil Scholarship Award in memory of Lance Vermeil, an extremely qualified and dedicated young strength and conditioning coach. Coach Vermeil was committed to the profession of collegiate strength and conditioning and, most importantly, to serving and protecting the student-athlete.

Prospective recipients are nominated by CSCCa-approved mentors who they believe are deserving of receiving the scholarship. The individuals must have shown a commitment to having a career in the field of strength and conditioning on the collegiate and/or professional level and must have demonstrated tremendous potential and inclination for the profession. Additionally, the individual must be SCCC certified or planning to sit for the SCCC certification exam at the most upcoming national conference.
