Kats add 6-7 forward from Australia

HUNTSVILLE — Sam Houston men's basketball coach Jason Hooten has announced the addition of a transfer forward from Pittsburg State for the 2022-23 season.

Cameron Huefner, a 6-7 junior from Adelaide, Australia, was the Gorillas' third-leading scorer last season, averaging 9.7 points per game in 24 starts. He also averaged 4.9 rebounds a game.

"We are very excited to finish our 2022 recruiting class with the signing of Cameron Huefner," Hooten said. "Cameron comes from a great D2 program, Pittsburg State, where his coach Kim Anderson retired. Cam was recruited there by Justin Bailey, so the relationship and fit was obviously evident."

Huefner shot 51 percent from the field and 40 percent from 3-point range. He also hit 78 percent from the free throw line while averaging close to 25 minutes a game.

He scored a career-high 22 points against Lincoln on Feb. 5 and had a season-best eight rebounds against Central Missouri on Dec. 18.

"Cam is a high IQ player with the toughness and work ethic that we always look for in a player," Hooten added. "He will give us immediate help on both ends of the floor with his ability to play inside and out. He is a very good shooter who will fit into our offensive scheme.

"Cam can also score with his back to the basket, and we look forward to helping him get better in other facets of his game."

As a freshman, Huefner saw action in 18 games and averaged 6.5 points and 3.3 rebounds per contest. He shot 50 percent from behind the arc and had a season-high 19 points and eight rebounds against Rogers State on Jan. 30, 2021.

Before signing with Pittsburg State, he averaged 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists per game for the Under 18 Norwood Flames and was selected for the South Australian State Team. Huefner also competed for the Norwood Men's Premier League team.
