Hrbacek, Morgan named WAC Players of the Week

ARLINGTON – Coming off its first win of the 2022 season, the Sam Houston Bearkats picked up a pair of weekly honors on Monday when the WAC announced Zach Hrbacek and Seth Morgan as the league's Offensive and Special Teams Players of the Week.

Both were key in helping lead the Kats to a 27-17 win over Texas A&M-Commerce on Saturday at Bowers Stadium and the honors are the first of the season for Sam Houston.

It was a breakout game for Hrbacek, a redshirt freshman from Troy who led a Bearkat rushing attack that finished with 248 yards on the ground against the Lions. Individually, Hrbacek toted the ball 19 times for 131 yards in the game, getting into the end zone once and averaging 6.9 yards per carry.

It was the first career 100-yard game for him and the first for the Kats this year. Of his 19 carries, 18 went for positive yardage and his 7-yard touchdown in the fourth quarter gave the Kats a 24-10 lead after the Lions had cut the deficit to just a touchdown.

Morgan, meanwhile, responded from an early field goal misfire to nail a pair of 3-pointers from beyond 40 yards and handled all placekicking and kickoff duties for the Kats in the game. He was 3-for-3 on PATs and gave the Kats a 3-0 lead with a 40-yard field goal in the first quarter before capping the scoring with a 46-yarder late in the fourth quarter.

Morgan now has seven field goals of over 40 yards in his career, and is 3-for-3 this year on tries between 40-49 yards.

The Bearkats have a bye week on the schedule this week before traveling to Houston next week to take on rival Stephen F. Austin in the annual Battle of the Piney Woods at NRG Stadium.
