Baker named WAC Defensive Player of the Week

HUNTSVILLE – After another big week, sophomore libero Hannah Baker has been named the WAC Defensive Player of the Week, per a release from league officials on Monday.

Baker's efforts helped the Bearkats to a split of two matches last week to open up WAC play, including a huge 5-set win over rival Stephen F. Austin that snapped a 9-match losing skid for Sam Houston.

The Deer Park native average 5.2 digs per set in the two matches last week, starting off with 14 in a 3-2 loss at Abilene Christian. But two days later she turned in a huge match, keeping alive 38 digs in the victory over the Ladyjacks, a team who entered with a 13-1 overall record.

It was the third straight win in the series for SHSU over SFA, but wasn't even Baker's biggest match to date this year. Just one week earlier she erupted for 50 digs against Tulsa, a new Sam Houston record.

Baker currently is averaging 5.03 digs per set for the year, which ranks her third among all players in the WAC.

She and the rest of the Kats continue WAC play this week when they travel west for matches at Seattle U on Thursday, and at Utah Valley on Saturday.
