Series vs the Flames: First meeting
HUNTSVILLE – The Sam Houston volleyball team will close out the home portion of the regular season this weekend at Johnson Coliseum when it hosts Liberty for a pair of Conference USA matches on Friday and Saturday.
Each match will be aired on ESPN+ with Jason Barfield on the call for Friday and Jordan Smith taking the mic for Saturday's weekend finale.
Saturday's finale will also serve as Senior Day for the Kats with Jaylibeth Garcia-Rosa to be honored prior to the match.
The Kats are still alive for a berth in the CUSA Tournament with two weeks remaining in the regular season, and will close with a pair of teams – Liberty and NM State - in the middle of the pack of the league standings.
Coach Brenda Gray's squad picked up a key win over Louisiana Tech on October 4 to draw even with the Bulldogs in the win column, but since have dropped six straight to the likes of Middle Tennessee, UTEP and nationally-ranked WKU.
Sam Houston goes into the weekend leading CUSA with 15.16 digs per set, paced by libero Hannah Baker's league-best 4.87 per set. She has already blown by the career record at Sam Houston with 1,785 career digs rank, which ranks in the top 20 in the country among active players and second among non-seniors.
Meanwhile, freshman Payton Woods continues to impress in her debut season with an average of 3.28 kills per set. That marks ranks third overall in CUSA and leads all league rookies.
