Huntsville - A balanced attack from the Bearkats led them to a 67 - 65 victory in their season opener against the HBU Huskies on Saturday.
Three different Bearkats scored in double figures in the Victory. Sydnee Kemp's 14 points including 3-three pointers powered the Kats to the Victory. Diana Rosenthal and Raanee Smith added 12 and 11 points respectively. The Kats took the ball away from the Huskies 18 times, with Rosenthal leading the way with six steals of her own.Â
Smith also tied a career high in rebounds with 13, giving Smith her first double-double of the season.
Sam Houston led by as many as 17 early through the 3rd quarter, however HCU's Enya Maguire's career high 23 points and 11 rebounds dwinddled the Bearkats' lead to within two points late in the 4th quarter. After only making one of her two free throws, a late steal on the Huskies' inbound pass by Smith would seal the win for the Kats.
Sam Houston now leads the former Southland conference opponents in all-time series, 12-9.
The Kats will travel to face the University of Houston Cougars on Tuesday, Nov. 14, with the gam being streamed on ESPN+
