DALLAS – Sam Houston outside hitter Payton Woods was named to the Conference USA All-Freshman Team on Thursday, per a release from league officials. Â
Woods, a freshman from Montgomery (Lake Creek HS), battled through injury throughout the year but still managed to be an impact player when she was on the court. Â
She played in just 14 of the Bearkats' 29 matches for the year, but averaged 3.20 kills per set for the season with 157 total kills. Woods was even better in eight CUSA matches, averaging 3.56 kills per set, a mark which would have led all CUSA freshmen and been third overall in the league had she qualified for official statistical rankings.Â
She played in the first two tournaments of the season before injury cut her September in half; still, she opened the year with a bang, earning all-tournament honors at the season-opening Bearkat Classic where she went for 15 kills against Nicholls and 16 vs Portland. Â
Woods turned in a huge weekend in its series vs Louisiana Tech, putting up consecutive 19-kill matches, averaging 5.42 kills per set against the Bulldogs. She later had another huge weekend against UTEP with matches of 21 and 15 kills vs the Miners, hitting .375 for that weekend. Â
