TROY, Ala. — Just when the Trojans thought the coast was clear, the Bearkats were lying in wait for a tasty win.
Sam Houston ambushed Troy in the second half after falling behind double digits to earn a much-needed 88-86 road victory in overtime at Trojan Arena on Monday. The Kats (2-3) snapped a three-game skid ahead of a matchup against Grambling as the Troy Classic continues Wednesday.
Lamar Wilkerson scored 25 points as Sam Houston continued to shoot the ball well from 3-point range, connecting on 8 for 18, or 44 percent, of its attempts.
Damon Nicholas Jr. scored a career-high 15 points and added 10 boards for his first double-double of the season.
The Trojans (2-3) led 59-43 with 12 minutes to go in regulation when the Bearkats made their move. Back-to-back layups by
Owen McGlashan, who finished with 10 points, and Nicholas helped Sam Houston get it down to a single digit lead when McGashan knocked down a 3.
Kian Scroggins eventually gave the Kats the lead five minutes later when he converted an old fashion three-point play to make it 64-63.
Neither team could get that clutch shot to fall down the stretch as the game went to overtime.
Wilkerson gave Sam Houston the advantage for good with a layup at the beginning of the extra period.
Anthony Wrzeszcz, who scored 11 points along with
Davon Barnes, and Nicholas made key shots at the line and from behind the arc to lift the Kats to the win.
