Kats chasing title at Mid Winter Classic

JONESBORO, Ark. — The Sam Houston bowling team will be the third seed in the championship bracket at the Mid Winter Classic on Saturday at the Jonesboro Bowling Center.

The Bearkats went 2-2 on the day and are now 6-3 in the tournament with 10,637 total pins. McKendree is in first at 10,742, Louisiana Tech is second at 10,701 and Arkansas State is fourth at 10,625.

"Overall, today was really good once we got the black cloud over our head cleared from the first match heart break," head coach Brad Hagen said. "Anytime you do the right thing and lose sight of the right stuff which should always out weight the bad, it tends to cause more harm than good.

"We averaged over 223 for our last three sets which was amazing and proves the firing power and potential we have still in us," he added. "Validation that we can overcome obstacles and still make something out of the day. We still managed to go plus 327 and average 213.80 for our overall 5 sets today. We're in the mix for another championship and all you can ask for."

Sam Houston tied Arkansas State in the opening match at 1,047 but lost 105-79 in a roll off. The Bearkats did pick up a 1,168-920 win over Alabama A&M and knocked off Wisconsin-Whitewater 1,155-1,020.

Kaia Gray, who stands ninth in the individual standings with 1,101 pins, rolled a 238 against Alabama A&M and 255 against Wisconsin-Whitewater. Elise Chambers, who is 12^th with 1,081 pins, scored 257 against Arkansas State and 258 against Alabama A&M, while Taylor Lucas turned in a 256 against Alabama A&M.
