Kats drop doubleheader at NM State

LAS CRUCES — The Sam Houston softball team had plenty of offense but could not close out New Mexico State in a pair of losses at NM State Softball Complex on Friday.

The Bearkats hit six home runs in the doubleheader and scored a combined 14 runs. The Aggies responded each time Sam Houston took the lead as the Kats dropped to 14-26 overall and 5-6 in Western Athletic Conference play.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series Sunday at 2 p.m.

Brailey Wasik blasted two home runs, but it was not enough to carry Sam Houston in a 9-6 loss to New Mexico State in game one of a Western Athletic Conference doubleheader on Friday at NM State Softball Complex.

The Aggies jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning until the Bearkats started chipping away. Elia Hebel got Sam Houston on the board with a solo home run to right field in the second.

Ellie Grill walked and Tricia Yarotsky was hit by a pitch with one out to begin the third. Wasik followed with a three-run bomb to right center field to put the Bearkats on top 4-2.

After NM State tied the game with two runs in the bottom of the third, Wasik struck again to give Sam Houston a 6-4 lead in the fifth. Grill singled to begin the inning, and Wasik cleared the bases with a two-run home run to left.

The Aggies were able to score five runs in the bottom half of the inning to secure the victory.

New Mexico State scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to rally past Sam Houston for a 10-8 series-clinching victory in the nightcap on Friday.

The Bearkats took an 8-5 lead in the top of the sixth when Emily Telg reached on an error to setup an RBI double by Ellie Grill. Tricia Yarotsky then launched her second two-run home run of the game to center field.

The Aggies retook the lead with three home runs in the bottom of the frame and held on for the victory.

Yarotsky hit a two-run shot in the first inning followed by a two-run single by Hannah Scheaffer to give Sam Houston a 4-0 lead. The other run came on Elia Hebel's solo home run in the fifth, her second of the day.
