BATON ROUGE – It took about 20 hours longer than expected, but the Sam Houston Bearkats have advanced to the third round of the Baton Rouge Regional with a 10-2 win over Tulane.
In a game that started at 2 p.m. on Saturday afternoon resumed on Sunday after rain and lightning delayed the game until after 10 p.m. Saturday night when the decision was made to conclude the game on Sunday with the Kats leading 7-2.
Logan Hewitt started the restart for the Kats and stepped into a tough spot. He inherited a bases-loaded jam with two outs in the top of the 7
th. After going 3-0 to the first batter he faced, he got a ground out to end the threat.
In the top of the 8
th inning,
Justin Wishkoski put the game out of reach with a three-run blast to dead center putting the Kats up 10-2. Hewitt finished out the game on the hill, allowing just two base runners. While striking out one.
With the win, the Kats will play at 8 p.m. Sunday and face the loser of the LSU and Oregon State game.
On Saturday,
Walker Janek got the scoring started for the Kats with a solo homer to left center. After Tulane tied the game up,
Myles Jefferson's RBI groundout gave the Kats the lead back. Then
Joe Redfield delivered a three-run blast to right field to give the Kats a 5-1 lead.
The homer for Redfield was his 100
th hit of the season, joining teammate
Tyler Davis reaching the century mark in hits. It's the first time in school history two hitters have 100 hits in the same season.
Steven Beard got the win for the Kats, improving his record to 8-3 on the season. He went 6 innings, allowing nine hits, one run while striking out three.
