Bowlers finish day one at Northeast Classic

NEW CASTLE, Del. — The Sam Houston bowling team is in ninth place following day one of the Northeast Classic.

The Bearkats totaled 5,067 pins as they went 3-2 in baker match competition on Friday. North Carolina A&T (5,457) is in first followed by Maryville (5,393), Youngstown State (5,274), Vanderbilt (5,258), Jacksonville State (5,206), Nebraska (5,200), Tulane (5,159) and Arkansas State (5,074).

"Anytime you're in a new center you're having to pay attention to everything, so to learn the characteristics of the center," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We touched the whole house today and when you have a 60-lane center, there's a lot to take notes on seeing the high end to low end of the building play quite different and that's before you factor in the temp of the building.

"We'll take note of what we did today and apply it for tomorrow. All we can do is continue to execute and do our part."

Sam Houston lost its first two matches to Delaware State and North Carolina A&T before closing the first day strong. The Bearkats won their next two matches convincingly with a 1,042-885 victory over Wilmington and a 1,013-767 thumping of Norfolk State before closing out Molloy 948-747.

The teams will play traditional competition on Saturday with the top four in total pins advancing to the championship round on Sunday.
