Kats drop to 11th at Northeast Classic

NEW CASTLE, Del. — The Sam Houston bowling team slipped two spots in the standings to miss out on advancing to the championship round at the Northeast Classic on Saturday.

The Bearkats are in 11th place going 3-2 in traditional match competition to finish with 10,089 total pins after day two. Jacksonville State (10,664) moved into first place followed by North Carolina A&T (10,657), Youngstown State (10,591), Nebraska (10,435), Tulane (10,394), Arkansas State (10,208), Vanderbilt (10,205), Stephen F. Austin (10,184), Louisiana Tech (10,166) and Maryville (10.098).

"We're 64 pins away from a 9-1 start to this weekend verse what we are and a few less hiccups from being where we need to be," head coach Brad Hagen said. "We're close but consistency and execution needs to be better as well as our individual consistency. Right now, it's all or nothing and it's tough when we've been only going back at it full time for less than 2 weeks.

"This time of the year is demanding, and we need to make sure we keep taking steps forward and not four forward and three back."

Denise Blankenzee was 50th in the individual standings with 1,001 pins Saturday to help Sam Houston beat Niagara 1,056-985, Chestnut Hill College 1,095-837 and New Jersey City 984-847.

The Northeast Classic will conclude with the final round on Sunday.
