HOUSTON – Just a week after claiming its first tournament title of the season, the Sam Houston men's golf team won its second trophy in as many weeks in taking the team title at the Bayou City Collegiate on Tuesday at Westwood Country Club.
The Bearkats finished 27 shots under par for the 54-hole event, besting second-place Abilene Christian by a pair of shots. The Rice A team was the third squad to finish better than 20 shots under par at -23, next followed by ULM at -13.
Sam Houston got out to a quick start on Monday, setting the tournament record for round to par with a first round of -15. The Kats then turned around and dropped 10 more shots in Round 2, finishing Day 1 in a tie with ACU at -25, which also set the tournament record for score to par thru 36 holes.
It was a true team effort for the Kats with only Bret Gray and Hugo Trommetter finishing in the individual top 10, closing their weeks at -7 for a tie for ninth. But Alex Malanga and Gene Chaikangwal were right behind them with Malanga finishing 12th at -6 and Chaikangwal in a tie for 13th at -5.
Gray opened the tournament red-hot with rounds of 65 and 69 on Monday before closing with a 75 on a day which saw higher scores across the board. Trommetter went 68-68-73 for his week, while Malanga opened with a 68 before closing with rounds of 72 and 70. Chaikwangal's best round came in Round 2 with a 69, sandwiched between scores of 72 and 70.
Josh German was the final piece of the lineup, firing 74-74-73 for a 44th-place finish. Freshman Sebastian May rebounded from a tough first 36 holes to fire an even-par round of 72 in the finale, closing in 74th place.
The Kats also sent a trio of individuals with freshman Ethan Dufresne standing out by finishing in a tie for 20th place with solid rounds of 70-71-72, while Daniel Moon went 71-73-74 to end in a tie for 38th.
Sam Houston will take some time off before heading to the West Coast for the Leadership & Golf Collegiate Tournament on October 21-22, in Seaside, Calif. The event is hosted by Saint Mary's College and will be played at Bayonet Golf Course on the Monterey Peninsula.
