DALLAS — Sam Houston senior Lamar Wilkerson has been selected as one of the top players in Conference USA ahead of the 2024-25 basketball season, the league office announced on Thursday.
Â
Wilkerson, a 6-3 shooting guard from Ashdown, Arkansas, stepped out of a contributing role and into a leading actor for the Bearkats last season which earned him preseason All-CUSA honors. He is a big reason Sam Houston has also been selected to finish third in the conference a year after winning the regular season championship.
Â
Louisiana Tech has been picked to win the league with three first-place votes for a total of 87 points following a runner-up finish last season. CUSA tournament champion Western Kentucky is second at 85 points with two first-place nods.
Â
The Bearkats also received three first-place votes for 83 points followed by Middle Tennessee (69) and Liberty (62) and UTEP which are tied for fifth. The Blue Raiders and the Flames each received one first-place vote as well.
Â
NM State (39) is selected seventh, Jax State (29) eighth and FIU and Kennesaw State are tied for ninth.
Â
Wilkerson was named first-team All-Conference USA after leading the regular season champion Bearkats to a 21-12 record and 13-3 league mark as conference newcomers. He led the team in scoring at 13.8 and made 52 3-point baskets while shooting 34.7 percent from long range.
