HARAHAN, La. — Sam Houston placed third at the Colonial Lanes Classic hosted by Tulane on Sunday.
Â
The Bearkats went 9-4 during the tournament including 3-1 on the final day to finish with 13,725 total pins. Stephen F. Austin won the event and finished with 13,423 pins followed by Vanderbilt with 13,738.
Â
Sam Houston lost to Sacred Heart to open the day then knocked off North Carolina A&T 4-3 with a 254-244 win in the final game. That setup a showdown with Sacred Heart for third and the Kats got revenge with a 4-1 victory.
Â
"Today's progress speaks volume of the resilience this team can build on," head coach Brad Hagen said. "I don't recall in a very long time or ever where we've shot so many poor games followed up by some monster scores.Â
Â
"The A&T match was a great example of rebounding immediately from some errant shots then going shot for shot with one of the best teams in the country. After shooting a measly 155 game, we followed it up on the same lane shooting 248, 256, 254 which is a rare but exciting run. We're not where we want to be yet but all things considered, we checked a lot of boxes off this first half, and we are ascending in the right direction. Time to get rested and healthy."
Â
Sam Houston has a break in the season until Jan. 17 when the Bearkats take part in the Northeast Classic in New Castle, Delaware.
