HUNTSVILLE — The Bearkats looked right at home Thursday night, almost as if this wasn't the first time they played at Johnson Coliseum this season.
Sam Houston put on a show for the fans who were ready to finally cheer on the orange and white to the tune of a 105-78 victory over Trinity. The Kats improved to 3-2 on the season with the victory, the first over the Tigers (2-1) since a 70-63 win in 1961.
Cameron Huefner scored a career-high 26 points to lead Sam Houston. Lamar Wilkerson added 25 points, Kalifa Sakho chipped in 19 and Dorian Finister finished with 15.
The Bearkats showed why they came into the game ranked ninth in the country in 3-point percentage. In the first 20 minutes, Sam Houston was nailing 3s on 55 percent of its long-range shots by going 6 for 11.
Wilkerson, who scored 20 points in the first half, led a 10-0 run by converting a three-point play after he was fouled on a layup. He followed with a jumper as Huefner, who had missed the previous two games with an injury, made a basket and Josiah Hammons connected from behind the arc to give the Kats a 20-8 lead.
Finister also sparked a 10-0 run with a three-point play to give Sam Houston a commanding 53-35 advantage at halftime.
The second half allowed the Bearkats to get some valuable minutes to players off the bench. Nine of the 11 players who saw action scored Thursday as Hammons added eight points, and Jaxson Ford and Brennen Burns scored four each.
Sam Houston hits the road to take part in the Live Oak Bank Holiday Classic in Wilmington, North Carolina Nov. 27-30. The Kats play Appalachian State in the opener on Nov. 27 at 3 p.m.
